Bio

Sam is a neuropsychologist with an interest in immersive technologies and how they are best used in both training and patient care. Sam is a Professor of Psychology at the University of Exeter where he founded the Virtual Immersive Training and Learning (VITAL) research group (VITAL). He is the Chief Scientific Officer (CSO) for Cineon (www.cineon.io). Sam’s research uses technology to understand human performance and learning, applying theories from cognitive science and motor control psychology to understand how humans perform at their best. As immersive technologies such as Virtual Reality (VR) have become popular Sam has become interested in the ways in which they can be harnessed to enhance training, augment human performance, and enable innovative research. Sam has published more than 100 peer reviewed scientific articles, many of which have VR as the topic of enquiry or the methodology.
Sam’s Virtual Reality research has been operationalised in many fields including medicine, defence, sport, and aviation. In his talk Sam will discuss ways in which we test and evaluate VR tools, and how we make good decisions about when is the right and wrong time to use VR. His talk will tackle important questions such as ‘How do we scientifically and robustly test Virtual Reality for training?’, ‘What new factors come in to play when evaluating VR for patient care?’ His talk will discuss methods and approaches used in a range of previous projects. These methods include bespoke psychometric tests, eye tracking technology, and behavioural assessment, and will be brought to life through examples from his own research projects.
