Medical professionals often encounter challenging situations where they must deliver difficult news to patients or their families, which can provoke strong emotional reactions. In paediatric settings, communicating unfavourable information to parents can be particularly demanding. This study explores a novel approach using Virtual Reality (VR) to help prepare medical professionals for these sensitive interactions. Our VR-based training simulation involves delivering bad news to a virtual parent. Participants, embodying a doctor avatar, were tasked with delivering bad news about a child’s surgery cancellation to a virtual parent displaying anger and distress. They then evaluated their performance in VR from either the parent’s first-person perspective or a third-person perspective, focusing on self-efficacy. In this talk, we will present the technical setups of Embodied Perspective-Taking in a medical communication training application. We will also discuss the results of this study involving 16 medical professionals from a paediatric hospital and explore the potential future research directions in this area.
