Transforming Healthcare from Within: The Journey of Building an In-House XR Service in the NHS This presentation explores the journey of establishing an internal Extended Reality (XR) service within an NHS organisation, drawing from experiences at the Digital Futures lab in Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust. It examines the transformative potential of developing in-house XR solutions that enhance patient care, staff education, and operational efficiency across multiple healthcare domains. Central to this approach is the emphasis on digital literacy and workforce development. The talk will detail strategies for cultivating a digitally confident NHS staff, creating new career pathways, and fostering a culture of innovation. It will showcase how this initiative attracts new skills and talents into the NHS, opening up diverse career opportunities in the NHS. The importance of a co-design lab environment will be highlighted, demonstrating how healthcare professionals, technologists, and patients collaborate on user-centred solutions. The lab offers a unique space for creative and industry partners to work alongside NHS staff, testing and evaluating solutions to ensure clinical relevancy. This collaborative environment enables the practical application of emerging technologies in healthcare, focusing on accessibility and well-considered implementation. By providing a platform for cross-sector collaboration, the lab facilitates the development of XR solutions that are both innovative and attuned to the specific needs of healthcare settings. The talk shares challenges encountered in implementing an in-house XR service and outline strategies for building a sustainable XR programme. By sharing insights from this journey, the presentation aims to provide a roadmap for other NHS organisations to embrace in-house XR development and cross-sector collaboration.
